Book Journal

For quite a while now most of my posts have been about the house and it’s associated areas. I tend to shy away from posting too much personal stuff anyway, but I thought i could try to expand what I talk about a little. So I’m going to start a book journal (sure to be a highly incomplete one as I won’t post about the ones I’m reading that are complete trash, although I usually enjoy those the most).

Right now I’m reading The Game (I know, I know, titles underlined, blah blah. I can’t find the stupid underline button.) by Laurie R. King. This is one of several books in a series about Sherlock Holmes and a woman who becomes his partner later in his life. I read the first one, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, in an English literature class back in my sophomore year in college. I really enjoyed it, and so have read the following books as well. They have all been excellent books; I think they’re more complex in their character development, cultural commentary, and even mystery as well. They can be a little hard at times to get through, but this was has been easier than most. Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes have traveled to India on behalf of his brother Mycroft (and the British government) to search for a missing spy who Holmes once knew. I know the idea of some woman joining up as Holmes’ investigative partner (among other things) sounds a little hokey; it did to me at first too. But King has created a female protagonist whose strength, character, and abilities match well with Holmes, and the books are enjoyable, complex and well written.
