Pet Peeve

Today in the supermarket check out line I was eavesdropping on two ladies who were talking about fishing. They mentioned how the dad of one of them had caught some fish at Round Lake that tasted like mud, and as this lake is in an area I know something about, I suggested that the dad could try another lake in the area. We got into a bit of a discussion about fishing and I said that the people i’d gone fishing with had eaten and apparently enjoyed the fish they caught in this lake.

Then i said that I wouldn’t know, as I’m a vegetarian, and one of the ladies said “oh, my daughter’s a vegetarian too!” Which is certainly nice, always good to know there’s more of us out there (although if you count much of India our numbers are pretty good anyway). Then she uttered THE WORDS:

“She eats fish though.”

AAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!!!!!!

YOU CANNOT BE A VEGETARIAN AND EAT FISH. IT ISN’T POSSIBLE. YOU ARE EATING MEAT!!! MEAT!!!! FISH IS A MEAT!!!!! GAHHH! I CAN’T STAND PEOPLE SAYING THIS TO ME ANY MORE!!!!

I did, however, manage somehow to not flip out at this lady as it’s probably her stupid daughter who calls herself a vegetarian. Though I wasn’t able to stop myself from saying “Oh, well she isn’t a vegetarian then” with a sweet and sympathetic smile at the poor lady with the stupid daughter who thinks fish aren’t animals.
