Early mornings
For some reason my favorite time to catch up on little tasks around the house that I’ve been putting off is in the morning, before I go to work. It probably has a lot to do with procrastination (in college I always found myself cleaning my room and doing laundry when I was supposed to be writing a paper). Or maybe it’s because I know the time I have to do those things in the morning is limited, so I can’t get too sucked into all the other things I need to do.
So this morning I loaded and ran the dishwasher, cleaned off a small portion of the desk, put on moisturizer, and blogged, all things I normally ignore in the evenings when I’d rather be doing something else, like going for a walk, or in the case of yesterday evening, helping Mike move enormous rocks from the flower bed in front of the house to make a new bed over on the side of the lawn, until nine o’clock at night when we finally decided to call it quits.
I wish I had a little more genuine self-motivation, as in, the ability to decide to do things when they need to be doing and when I actually have the time to finish them (namely, evenings and weekends). But in the end I kind of enjoy these funny compulsions, because I can just enjoy the motivation ride - no effort needed.
Everynow and then I think about how it could be risky to post such things, because when I have hypothetical children and they’re old enough, they could stumble across this and use it as an excuse as to why they aren’t doing their homework - “I don’t want to bother doing it ahead of time, because I just wait until the right moment I’ll become motivated without actually having to try. Maybe tomorrow morning”.
